ALFA is saddened to have lost one of our Board of Directors, Jerry Elliott, who was taken from us on May 31, 2014 after a long battle with cancer. We rejoice that Jerry is no longer in pain and has gone to his forever home. Yet we will miss him dearly. It was Jerry who first encouraged us to obtain the 501 (c ) 3 and then donated the money needed to begin the long process of obtaining our non-profit status. Jerry and his wife Mary, prior to her death, contributed generously to Abiding Love for Africa. Shortly before Jerry’s death ALFA received yet another large money gift from the Elliott Family Trust. The Elliotts have done much to help us make a difference in Kagadi Town and the greater Kibaale District, Uganda!
Happily, due to generous funding gifts, the dormitories were outfitted with bunk beds in 2013, instead of the 90 single beds which had really overcrowded the two rooms of 48 girls, and 42 boys (60 of those 90 children are deaf)! However, in October of 2014 there have been a number of new students arriving, so there are nearly 120 children; more bunk beds are needed as well as the mattresses and bedding for each. In 2013 some Solar Panels for the dormitories were purchased, greatly helping the communication possibilities for, especially the seriously hearing-impaired children, since, when dark came signing couldn’t be seen, and therefore communication among the deaf children used to be greatly hampered.
